While a metering pump operates on a simple premise of dosing a calculated amount of fluids, there are several factors that will impact not just the size of pump that you will need, but the overall productivity.
Fluid Temperature
Never decide on a particular style of dosing pumps such as a peristaltic pump or a Diaphragm type pulse injection without knowing the average temperature requirements of the fluid you will be dosing. Since the fluid will be pumped frequently and repeatedly, this seemingly small aspect may, in fact, become a gigantic problem especially if compatible parts are not used.
Knowing the Pressure
Temperature is not the only factor that affects the inlet and the outlet of the dosing pump. The correct equipment can only be chosen if the level of pressure has been accurately measured beforehand. That means, liquid dosing is actually based upon choosing the right pumps that can handle the needed pressure range.
In the Event of a Leak
Over time it is not unusual for leaks to occur in industrial equipment such as large dosing pump settings. In many cases, this happens because the dosing fluid has corrosive properties or the wrong type of dosing pipe was used.
More modern models of dosing pumps come with leak protection options and mechanisms that automatically alerts the operator when a leak has been detected. In older versions or if there has been compromises on quality of metering pumps purchased, these types of control and alert mechanisms usually does not exist. Overheating of equipment until the leak is detected can also cause the entire system to become non-operational costing even more due to downtime on production.
Certain pumps are signal controlled and some will sound an alarm in the diaphragm head of the pump itself, and some metering pump models offer you flowrate control remotely (with additional actuator installed) and this can prevent large amounts of unnecessary chemicals from going into the fluid being treated.
Viscosity Does Matter
The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to deformation at a given rate. Viscosity is when fluid is really thick and sludgy and potentially has solids or semi-solids within it. This is a major concern particularly for water treatment plants and distilleries as it determines the end result greatly.
When your company is expected to have thick, sludgy water or fluids to deal with, then a powerful dosing pump with resilient and durable equipment is needed.
What Runs the Pump
The most obvious and yet most overlooked factor when choosing the right dosing pumps is whether or not your dosing pump runs on the same power source as your plant or factory. Because certain sites only utilize natural gas, solar power or standard thermal energy as opposed to electricity. If your plant has connections for all power sources, then there is no problem, but in most cases, you will need to check if the pump is compatible with the power source you are going to work with.
What is The Metering Pump Made Of?
Abrasive chemicals are a daily additive or an ingredient for several different industries. Dynamics of metering pumps as well as the core materials used at manufacturing process are important and thus can be made from range of materials (PVC, Stainless Steel, PVDF, aluminum and others), and it is up to the end-user to find out if the system can regularly withstand the nature of the chemicals that need to be dosed.
